Kings reign the south

Canterbury Kings 172-4 in 20 overs (Chad Bowes 40, Steven Murdoch 64) beat Otago Volts 142 all out in 19.2 overs (Kyle Jamieson 4-23, Edward Nuttall 2-9, Ben Cox 49) by 30 runs at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.

The Kings put a complete performance on the park with a competitive total and strong performance with the ball, taking down the Volts by 30 runs in the southern derby and ending the visitors' hopes of a playoff spot.

Scorecard

At a sunny and breezy Hagley Oval, the Kings looked to attack the Volts from the start with Chad Bowes (40 from 32) setting the pace early.

When Tom MacRury chased a Nathan Smith bouncer to be caught for 16, Steven Murdoch came to the crease and struck four fours and four sixes in his innings of 64 from just 38 balls on a fine surface that let the batsmen play their shots.

Cam Fletcher (20) and Kyle Jamieson kept the momentum going at the close to help the Kings through to 172-4.

The Volts' chase was under pressure straightaway as they slumped to 20-4, with Ed Nuttall (2-9) and Kyle Jamieson (4-23) taking care of their top four.

Ben Cox (49) and Brad Wilson (25) formed a partnership to rebuild and get the Volts close, but scoreboard pressure was always there, as the required run rate crept up to 13s and 14s in the face of some tight bowling.

Andy Ellis removed Wilson in the 16th over, caught in the deep trying to hit out, and when Cox went with 33 still needed and 9 balls remaining, the Volts' chances of the win and the playoffs went with him.

Jamison took the last two Volts wickets in two balls in the last over to hand the Kings the win by 30 runs on a fine Hagley day.
