The weather caused turmoil for Team Auckland in Dunedin, with the Hearts only able to get in a 12-over match against the Sparks, and the Aces only playing 11 overs.

The Hearts needed a win to make the Super Smash Final since the Magicians were looking particularly dominant against the Hinds up the road in Christchurch. So, when the weather cleared enough that play was possible, both teams were happy to have a 12-over blast.

After a good start from Anna Peterson (13) and Maddy Green (20), the Hearts ended up with a creditable 50 form their six overs.

However, when the Sparks opening batsmen sent the first over for 15 runs, that set the tone for the chase. The Hearts bowlers struggled to pick up wickets and bowl dots. In 5.2 overs, the Sparks took a nine-wicket win. That result means the Women’s Super Smash Final next Sunday at Eden Park Outer Oval will be between the Wellington Blaze and the Canterbury Magicians.

The Aces got onto the field against the Volts in the period of relatively good weather. Martin Guptill quickly hit seven fours and three sixes to reach 62 from 37. When the rain came after 11 overs the Aces were 117/1 with Glenn Phillips on 43 from 23 alongside Guptill.

While there was some hope the teams would make it back out for play, the match was eventually abandoned. The Aces next play on Friday against Wellington at the Basin Reserve.
